Chambers Joins BP Fossella and DSNY to Announce Investment in BID Cleanups

By Dom Provenzano, Staten Island Chamber of Commerce

The message is clear: don’t trash on Staten Island.

On August 2, Borough President Vito J. Fossella was joined by Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, the Forest Avenue BID, and the SIEDC outside of Jody’s Club Forest to announce a $70,000 investment in business improvement districts (BIDS) and merchant associations across Staten Island for beautification of their corridors, particularly in the removal of litter.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to use taxpayer money to invest in several of Staten Island’s business improvement districts for their cleanup efforts, beautification services, and so much more,” said Borough President Vito J. Fossella. “We want to let Staten Island thrive, and we can’t thrive when it’s dirty. We want to remind everyone how important it is to keep Staten Island clean.”

“Staten Island’s Business Improvement Districts have made significant investments in their communities, and we are thrilled to see their efforts supplemented by Borough President Fossella and DSNY Commissioner Tisch,” said Linda Baran, President & CEO of the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce. “This investment not only works toward beautifying our commercial corridors, but also ensures that our shopping districts are safe and welcoming for customers.”

“The city’s recovery really hinges, in my opinion, on cleaning up New York City,” said Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “This administration has made an unprecedented investment in doing just that. But it’s not just about our services - all New Yorkers must play a part.”

Earlier this summer, the Office of Borough President Vito Fossella held to announce Don’t Trash on Me, a new litter prevention and cleanup initiative from the Office of the Borough President. Through the new program, Staten Islanders can report littered locations to new “litter liaisons,” who will organize cleanup.

To report littered locations, please reach out to the Office of the Borough President’s litter liaisons Tiffany Arguello at (718-816-2069, targuello@statenislandusa.com) or Zsakee Lewis (718-816-2147, zlewis@statenislandusa.com).
