The Chamber's Building Awards Program, now in its 59th year and sponsored this year by National Grid, acknowledges the building and design industries' ability to adapt to the diversity of Staten Island's growing population. Each entry will be judged on its own merit by a panel of judges representing a cross section of several building-related industries.

Entries can be submitted for commercial, residential and mixed-use projects including new construction, renovations, alternations/additions, historical renovations, Sandy renovations, kitchens, bathrooms and other single rooms.

Entries can be submitted by a project’s owner, architect/engineer, builder, general contractor, certified interior designer, interior decorator, craftsman, and/or landscape contractor/designer. Each entry will be judged on its own merit by a panel of judges representing a cross section of several building-related industries.

The event will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021 at the Island Chateau.

The Categories:

EXTERIOR: This category applies to the general design, construction and craftsmanship of the exterior of a residential or commercial structure. Exterior entries should be submitted by the architect for design and the builder or general contractor for construction.

INTERIOR: This category applies to the general design, construction and craftsmanship of the interior of a residential or commercial structure. It includes lighting, interior design, custom cabinetry and articulation of space. Interior entries should be submitted by the architect or certified interior designer for design and the builder or general contractor for construction.

OUTDOOR SPACE: This category is a specialized award for outstanding design and/or decorating in an outdoor space. It includes landscape design and/or hardscaping. It recognizes the creation of beauty in an outdoor space through color, lighting, furniture selection and placement, and other elements of design that create a unique atmosphere in an exterior space.

SPECIALTY CRAFTSMANSHIP: This category applies to a particular element in a project, such as a handmade fireplace, staircase, stained-glass window, sculpture, mural or specific piece of art created for a residential or commercial project. The element must become an integral part of the structure. The craftsman/artist must show mastery of their craft, originality, and visual appeal.

GREEN BUILDING: This category applies to structures that have included the principles of green design and lessening the carbon footprint. The entry is to include elements utilizing alternative energy sources, materials, and design features that contribute to natural sustainability.
