Chamber Hosts 59th Annual Building Awards
On December 3, the Chamber hosted its 59th Annual Building Awards ceremony, which honors excellence in Staten Island’s commercial and residential properties for design and construction. The event, sponsored by National Grid, celebrated projects completed in 2019 and 2020, was held at the Island Chateau in Grasmere.
In total, 24 honors were awarded, including 20 Excellence Awards, 3 Discretionary Awards, and 1 Albert P. Melniker Award. The full list of Excellence Awards can be found below. The event also featured a keynote speech by Carlo A. Scissura, Esq., President & CEO of the New York Building Congress.
The prestigious Chairman’s Award, the highest honor in the Chamber’s Building Awards program, was awarded to the Swinnerton Street Residence, a French chateau-inspired home with over 5,000-square feet of space, custom woodworking throughout, and a resort-style backyard features an outdoor kitchen, bath, and cabana area with a fireplace. The entry was submitted by Angelo Romano of AJC Renovations LLC.
Tiny Gem Award, sponsored by Salmon Real Estate, celebrates a small residential space - such as a charming cottage or an amazing apartment – that proves great things can come in small packages. This year’s Tiny Gem Award winner was the Japanese Getaway Apartment, which was submitted by Daniel Ragusa of The Firebird Sweep Inc. and Donna Lee of DL Design Concepts, Inc.
The Hard Hat of the Year Award, sponsored by Empire State Bank, recognizes the resiliency and skills of a lead applicant who face significant challenges, yet completed the project on time and within budget. This year’s Hard Hat of the Year Award winner was Osteria Santina in Westerleigh, which was submitted by Jonathan Adamo of Phase One Construction.
Special recognition was given to the Friends of Postcards which was awarded the Albert P. Melniker Award, a discretionary award presented to a special person, group or structure that adds to the quality of life of the Staten Island community. Friends of Postcards was celebrated for their work beautifying the September 11th Postcards Memorial plaza and the surrounding areas and advocating for both Postcards and the First Responders memorial. The group was founded in 2019 by Victoria Cerullo, Dominick R. DeRubbio, Suzanne Klein, Amy E. Rice, and Alex Zablocki. This award was sponsored by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
