2020 Comes to a Close: A Note from Chamber President & CEO Linda Baran

As this year comes to a close, we reflect on a time in our lives like no other. The Covid-19 pandemic has caused so much pain and suffering. We have seen lives lost, including some of our own beloved Chamber members. 

Social distance. Wash your hands. Wear your mask. Mandated closures. Warnings against spending time with your own family… it’s all been so unsettling. 

We have seen businesses close, and others hanging on by a thread. The rules continue to change as we do our best to keep up. Who would have thought last March that this pandemic would wreak such havoc on our local economy, and threaten so many livelihoods? 

Politics and protests against injustice played a role in this year’s angst too. People are passionate about their beliefs and are trying desperately to hold on to their dreams.   

We continue to advocate for financial relief but little comes our way. Even with all of Staten Island’s elected officials fighting beside us, it’s all so frustrating. 

On Staten Island, we proudly share a sense of community and often shine in times of need. For all the businesses that fared well — let’s continue to help our fellow business owners and valued non-profits where we can.  For those of you who have not been as lucky, and who have sacrificed so much — I commend you for making it through an extremely difficult year, and for hanging tough - all while trying to figure out how to manage your own livelihoods, as you worry about taking care of your employees and their families. 

Please know the Chamber is here for you and will continue to help however we can. 

As we enter a new year, my hope is for a brighter future. That you, your families and friends stay healthy. That peace, love and respect prevail. And, that our members — the local businesses in our Staten Island-community — rebound back stronger and smarter than ever.

My “2021” New Year’s Resolution is simple – Health, Happiness & Prosperity for all!
